CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN ® hydrochloride

COMPOSITION
Each tablet contains:
Clonidine hydrochloride (D.C.I.) ……………………………. 0,150 mg.
Excipients: Lactose, dibasic calcium phosphate, maize starch, colloidal silica, povidone, stearic acid-palmitic ………… c.s.

INDICATIONS
CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN is indicated in the treatment of all grades of hypertension.

DOSAGE
The majority of hypertensions respond to an average dose of 2 tablets per day, one in the morning and the other at night before going to sleep. It is recommended to start treatment with 1 tablet at night and 10 to 15 days after this initial treatment start taking 1 tablet in the morning and another at night. In cases of resistance to this therapy it is necessary to gradually increase the dose, giving preference to the nocturnal dose, until adequate blood pressure control is attained. It is possible to take up to 8 doses per day; in this case it is recommended to distribute the medication uniformly throughout the day.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN is contraindicated in patients with sinoatrial node dysfunction.

PRECAUTIONS
Sudden discontinuation of this treatment should be avoided, because as with other antihypertensive drugs, it may provoke a hypertension crisis approximately 20 hours after the administration of the last dose. The symptoms include tachycardia, sweating, restlessness, tremor and cephalalgia, with increased urinary excretion of catecholamines When discontinuing therapy with CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN, the dosage must be reduce gradually and your doctor should give you instructions with regards to this: you should not discontinue therapy without consulting your doctor. Rebound hypertension due to withdrawal of this medication can usually be treated with reintroduction of clonidine or by administering alpha adrenoceptor blocking agents, such as phentolamine. As with all antihypertensive drugs, CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN must be used with caution in cases of severe coronary insufficiency, recent myocardial infarction, or cerebrovascular insufficiency. Patients with a known history of severe depressive psychosis should be regularly supervised while under long-term treatment with CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN as there have been occasional reports of further depressive episodes during oral treatment in such patients. Caution should be exercised in patients with bradycardia, severe hepatic or renal insufficiency, Raynaud's disease and thromboangiitis obliterans, and during lactation. During pregnancy it should only be administered if the benefits clearly justify any possible risks to the foetus. This product causes sedation and drowsiness; patients on CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN treatment should not drive or operate dangerous machinery until their competence to do so, whilst being treated, has been established. This medication contains lactose. Intolerance to this ingredient in children and adolescents has been reported. Even though the quantity present in this medication is probably not sufficient to cause symptoms of intolerance, you should consult your doctor if you experience diarrhoea.

INCOMPATIBILITES
The hypotensive effect of CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN can be potentiated if administered simultaneously with other antihypertensives, such as salidiuretics, vasodilators and ganglion blocking agents. During the concurrent administration of beta adrenoceptor blocking agents, in the case of having to interrupt treatment, with the object of avoiding sympathetic hypersensitivity, proceed in gradually reducing the doses of the beta adrenoceptor blocking agent and then gradually reducing the dose of CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN during various days.

Alpha adrenoceptor blocking agents and tricyclic antidepressants may reduce or abolish the effects of CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN. The effect of alcohol, tranquilizers, hypnotics and other nervous system depressants may be potentiated by CLONIDINE - CATAPRESAN.

SIDE EFFECTS
Initially, somnolence, sedation and dry mouth may be encountered. These effects usually diminish as treatment continues. Mental disturbances or sleep disturbances, vertigo, nausea, anorexia, cephalalgia, fatigue, bradycardia, constipation, weight gain, pruritus and skin rash have been reported.

OVERDOSE
In the case of an overdose you may experience a decrease in blood pressure accompanied by deep somnolence possibly leading to a semicomatose state. This state is reversible within 24 to 48 hours. The treatment recommended is gastric lavage, diuretics and the administration of alpha adrenoceptor blocking agents.
