Indication
Cipralex contains the active ingredient Escitalopram, which is a type of antidepressant medicine known as a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI). This type of medicine acts on nerve cells in the brain.
Escitalopram helps relieve depression, panic and fear.
It may take two to four weeks before Cipralex starts to improve your symptoms and you start to feel better.
Cipralex is used to treat:
-Condition of sudden attacks of fear, panic and confusion (panic disorder)
-Major depression
Precautions
Cipralex may reduce your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Cipralex effects you and you are sure it won't effect your performance.
Cipralex may cause low blood sodium levels (hyponatraemia), which can result in drowsiness, confusion, muscle twitching or convulsions. Consult your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms while taking Cipralex.
Use with caution in
Decreased kidney function
Decreased liver function
Diabetes mellitus
Elderly people
Epilepsy
History of mania or hypomania
People also receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
People at increased risk of bleeding
Not to be used in
Children and adolescents under 18 years of age for the treatment of depressive illness
Manic episodes of manic depression (bipolar affective disorder)
People who have taken monoamine-oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs) in the last 14 days

Cipralex Side effects
Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)
Confusion
Shaking, usually of the hands (tremor)
Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain

Fever (pyrexia)
Dizziness
Alteration in taste
Seizures
Sleepiness (somnolence)
Nervousness
Sexual problems
Drugs interaction
One should not use Cipralex at the same time as monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs). It should not be started for at least two weeks after stopping an MAOI, such as phenelzine, and for at least a day after stopping moclobemide. Similarly, MAOIs and moclobemide should not be started until at least one week after this medicine has been discontinued.
