Indication
Cardizem is prescribed to treat chest pain (angina), angina resulting from coronary artery spasm, as well as from exertion. Cardizem is also used in the treatment of high blood pressure. By slowing electrical conduction in the heart, Cardizem has been used in treating abnormally fast heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation.

The medicine intake
The capsule(s) may be taken without regard to meals twice daily or as directed. Swallow whole. Do not open, chew or crush the capsule. Do not stop taking Cardizem suddenly without your doctor's permission. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

Side Effects
Side effects of Cardizem are generally mild and transient. Cardizem can cause difficulty breathing or wheezing as a result of worsening heart failure. It can cause dizziness, weakness or fainting because of slow heart rate or low blood pressure. Other Cardizem side effects include swelling of the lower extremities, rash, headache, and constipation. Cardizem can also cause mildly abnormal liver tests that are generally reversible with discontinuation of the medication.

Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: heart problems, liver problems, lung diseases, allergies (especially drug allergies). Limit intake of alcohol while taking this drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug is excreted into breast milk. If there is no alternative to using this drug you should discontinue breast-feeding. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: cyclosporine, flecainide, beta-blockers (including eye drops), intravenous (IV) calcium, digoxin, lithium, disopyramide, high blood pressure medication, benzodiazepines (e.g., midazolam, triazolam), buspirone, lovastatin, quinidine, rifampin, carbamazepine, cimetidine, St John's wort. Avoid any drugs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestants phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are examples). These drugs are commonly found in over-the-counter cough-and-cold products. Do not start or stop use of Cardizem without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Cardizem, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage
Store Cardizem at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture.
