TIOTROPIUM (Spiriva®) is a long-acting bronchodilator, a medicine that helps people with lung problems like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to breathe more easily. Tiotropium works by opening up the air passages in your lungs. While Tiotropium may help to relieve your symptoms, such as shortness of breath and cough, it will not cure your condition. Tiotropium inhalation powder comes in a capsule. You will inhale the powder using a special device called a HandiHaler®. The HandiHaler breaks the capsule so you can breathe in the powder. Generic tiotropium inhalation powder capsules are not yet available.

SPIRIVA is a powder in a capsule. You inhale the contents of the capsule using the HandiHaler device. Do not swallow SPIRIVA capsules. SPIRIVA will not work if you swallow the capsules. If you have swallowed a capsule, call your doctor.

Special precautions
Tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

- bladder problems or difficulty passing urine
- glaucoma
- heart disease or irregular heartbeat
- prostate trouble
- an unusual or allergic reaction to tiotropium, ipratropium, lactose, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding

Side effects
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

- difficulty breathing, wheezing, increased shortness of breath
- chest pain or fast heartbeat
- headache (severe)
- serious problems with your vision (blurred vision, irritation or pain)
- skin rash or hives
- swelling of the lips, tongue or face
- vomiting

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

- blurred vision
- constipation
- diarrhea
- difficulty passing urine
- dizziness
- dry mouth
- headache
- nausea

Keep all appointment with your doctor.
